International Activities

  • Following the success of the BPSU the same methodology was adopted and adapted in the 1990’s to other countries whose paediatric services are amenable to an active surveillance approach.

  • Between 1992-1994, Units were developed in Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland and Malaysia.

  • By 1998 there were 10 national units.

  • In 1998 the International Network of Paediatric Surveillance Units (INoPSU) was launched at a meeting in Canada.

  • INoPSU mission is the advancement of knowledge of uncommon childhood infections and disorders and the participation of paediatricians in surveillance on a national and international basis.

  • The first INoPSU conference was held in Ottawa in June 2000.  Conferences are now held every 2 years.  The next being in Munich in 2008.

  • The International network of paediatric surveillance unit first progress report 1999-2003 was published in 2004.

  • There are now 14 countries that have established units.

  • 10,000 clinicians covering a child population of 50 million have investigated over 150 rare conditions.
